How to Clean and Store 14k Gold Jewelry

Solid 14k gold doesn't tarnish, doesn't turn green, and doesn't really “need” cleaning the way silver does. But it does collect skin oils, lotion, and the daily film of life — which dulls the polish over time. Here's a simple routine that keeps it looking new.

The 30-second weekly clean

  1. Run a small bowl of warm water and add 2–3 drops of mild dish soap (anything fragrance-free works).
  2. Drop your pendant in for 5 minutes. Don't soak chains for hours — not necessary, and prolonged soaking can affect the silk-cord pieces some pendants ship with.
  3. Use a soft toothbrush (or jewelry brush) to gently work around any engravings, settings, or detail.
  4. Rinse in clean water. Pat dry with a soft cloth (microfiber is ideal; a clean cotton tee works fine).
  5. Buff lightly with a polishing cloth if you want extra shine.

That's it. No special solutions, no ultrasonic cleaners, no jeweler's appointments.

What to avoid

  • Bleach, chlorine, or ammonia. These can pit and weaken the alloy over time.
  • Harsh toothpaste. Old internet advice; it's abrasive and will scratch the polish.
  • Pools and hot tubs. Take it off. Chlorine is the single fastest way to age a 14k piece.
  • Sleeping in chains. They tangle and stretch. Pendants are usually fine.

How to store it

The two enemies of stored gold are friction (against other jewelry) and humidity. Both are easy to solve:

  • Store pendants and chains separately. Each piece in its own pouch or compartment. Tangled chains are a five-minute repair job that nobody enjoys.
  • Keep it dry. A drawer is fine. A bathroom counter is not — the steam from a hot shower over weeks and months will dull the polish.
  • Use the gift box it came in. The branded box that ships with every JCN pendant is sized for storage; don't throw it out.

When to take it off

Solid 14k gold is durable enough to wear during most daily activities, including showering and washing dishes. Take it off for:

  • Pool, hot tub, or ocean swimming (chlorine and saltwater)
  • Heavy gym workouts where the chain might catch
  • Applying lotions, perfume, or hairspray (let those dry first, then put the jewelry back on)

The short answer

Once a week: warm water, mild soap, soft brush, dry cloth. Store separately, away from humidity. Avoid chlorine. That's the entire routine.
